Cham Island

About 19km East North East of Hoian Ancient Town is Cu Lao Cham. “68 miles to the East of Dien Phuoc district, high up in the middle of the sea is Ngoa Long Island , also named Hon Cu Lao, Tiem But or Chiem Bat Lao in the old days, and considered a natural defense for the Dai Chiem Estuary” as quoted in Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi.


This is an archipelago of 15 square km2 with 8 islets of different sizes located next to each other i.e Lao (harpoon ) Islet , Dai (long) Islet , Mo (tomb) Islet , Tai (ear)Islet, La ( leaf) Islet, Kho (Dry) Islet and Ong (Whale) Islet . It takes about 2 hours to go from Cua Dai Sea to Cham Island by motor-driven wooden boat os 22 minutes by canoes.

 


    Lao Islet is the biggest and most crowded in the complex of Cham Island. It is where visitors can find good restaurants and resorts. Visitors can call in at the beautiful poetic Tinh (love) Stream, Ong (Whale) Stream, Chong (husband)Islet , Ba (Mistress) Cave, or to swim in the cool water of Ong ( Whale) Beach, Bim (convolvulu’) Beach or Chong ( husband) Beach; or go diving or view the coral and various kinds of fish from a boat or a coracle with a glass bottom; or ride the waves on a canoe at the beautiful Chong Beach.

 


   Cham Island has pure eco-system and tropical sea- air which is a good environment for the development of the ecology such as swallows, shells and coral. It is also famous for exploiting swallows’ nests in the caves at the island which era valuable rare nutritious specialities fopmed from swallows’ saliva. Lao Islet and Kho Islet have the greatest number of swallows’ nests in the area. The wide forests covering every slope of the mountains are valuable natural resources important to the equalization of the eco-system on Cham Island.

 


   Moreover, Cham Island is regarded as the screen potecting fishing boats and ships from strong winds and storms. Around 25 architectural relics dated in the XVIII-XX centuries have been preserved intact. Some of them are Hai Tang Pagoda built in 1758, Swallow’s Nest Exploiting Founder Worshiping Shrine, Au Thuyen (a place for hiding from strong winds and storms), Ngoc Huong Monastery where monks live in solitude, and several Sa Huynh- Champa cultural archaeological remains.

 


  Cu Lao Cham shows great economic and tourism potential for the growth of Hoian in future.
